Oats - Steel Cut
Oats - Steel Cut
Also called Irish Oatmeal, these organic, steel cut oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel), which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are golden in color and resemble mini rice particles. Distinctive hearty, chewy flavor.
Note that these oats are not gluten-free and may contain trace amounts of barley, rye, wheat, and triticale from the grain-handling process as allowed by the U.S. Grain Handling Standards.
Oats are higher in protein than most other grains and full of fiber as well as vitamins and minerals, including manganese, phosphorus, copper, vitamin B1 (thiamine), iron, selenium, magnesium, and zinc. They’re also the only dietary source of avenanthramides, a type of antioxidant which may help prevent heart disease.
Steel cut oats cook in about 15-30 minutes. Bring 4 cups water with 1 tsp. salt to a boil. Gradually add 1 cup steel cut oats, stirring constantly. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until oats are tender.
