Fabric & Textiles
Textile waste is an enormous problem, and we don't yet have great solutions. The technology of fabric recycling is improving, but for now, most textile waste is downcycled—used for products like insulation, mattress fill, or pet bedding rather than new clothing. Reducing our environmental impact starts with steps like buying clothing mindfully, purchasing used whenever possible, participating in clothing swaps, and supporting brands that are committed to ethical manufacturing and sustainability. Washing textiles less often and avoiding the dryer are also good ways to help your items last longer.
Usable Craft Fabric
Full Circle Sustainability accepts donations of craft fabric of 1 yard or more for donation to Scraps KC.
Scrap Fabric
For fabric that is ripped, stained, worn or has otherwise reached the end of its useful life, bring it to Full Circle Sustainability or the Topeka Rescue Mission Distribution Center (401 NW Norris St., M-F, 8:00 a.m.-3:45 p.m.), where you can recycle it for free. It is baled and sent to a textile recycler. (Full Circle takes all donations to the Rescue Mission, so you are encouraged to take large donations directly there.)
Stuffed Textiles
Stuffed animals and pillows in very good condition can be donated to some thrift stores, but check before donating to make sure they will accept them. Don't put the burden of disposal on the thrift store!
The only outlet we currently know of for recycling stuffed textiles is the TerraCycle "Stuffed Animals Zero-Waste Box," which you can purchase as an individual. (Full Circle Sustainability does not accept stuffed textiles through their TerraCycle drop-off program.)
Reusable Shopping Bags
If you have more reusable shopping bags than you want or need, donate bags in usable condition to thrift stores or to the Topeka Rescue Mission, which uses them to distribute groceries. You can drop them off at the Topeka Rescue Mission Distribution Center (401 NW Norris St., M-F, 8:00 a.m.-3:45 p.m.).
