TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Spring has sprung, which means it’s time to go back into the garden and yard for another year. It could also be the perfect time to start composting. This process is when you take scraps and food waste into a natural fertilizer.
“You take your kitchen waste like your vegetable and fruit scraps. Maybe your coffee grounds and you can put them in a pile along with your dried leaves, twigs, your dried grass clippings,” said Robert Riley, Co-founder of Full Circle Sustainability.
These leftovers are then put in a place where nature can take its course undisturbed.
“Ultimately, you just need something to kind of hold it and contain it and be able to turn it and flip it every few weeks.”
. . . .
According to Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute, 28 percent of compostable trash is put in landfills, creating planet-warming methane. Composting reduces this footprint.
“It doesn’t have to be complicated or hard. You can kind of just let it do its thing. Nature takes care of itself. There can be ways that you can, you know, put too much greens or browns in, but you don’t really have to think about that too hard. You can experiment and see how it goes and adjust from there.”
