Meet M.A.D. Farms: Meat That's Making a Difference
Meet our newest supplier: M.A.D. Farms in Alta Vista, Kansas! Jason and Jocelynn Dagosta started M.A.D. Farms in 2019 after living in Germany for over a decade. They were struck by the differences in the food there—not just how it tasted, but how it was made. Foods had fewer preservatives and fewer artificial ingredients. Their bread would start to mold in a couple days...which they realized was actually a good thing! It started them on a full-fledged real-food journey.
Jason and Jocelynn were both city kids from Topeka, but Jocelynn's family owned farmland near Alta Vista, and they weren't strangers to hard work outdoors. They started thinking about doing something with that land when they came back to the U.S. They had the passion and the adventurous spirit, and as they learned and read more about regenerative farming, they decided to give it a go!
Their goal with M.A.D. Farms is "Making A Difference" by raising meat ethically using rotational grazing and regenerative agricultural practices, caring for the land and animals at the same time. As Jocelynn said, they raise animals who live great lives with just one bad day.
Cows, hogs, lambs, turkey, chickens—and at least one dog—make up the flock at M.A.D. Farms, and we had a lovely time seeing them when we went out to visit this week. They do their own chicken processing on the farm, so they showed us their licensed, open-air processing station. It's a great place for demonstrations, which they do regularly as part of their interest in being "100% transparent" about their operation. They host tours and occasional events, and we hope to make it down (with a group of you all) for another visit sometime!
In the meantime, give their products a try. We think you'll taste the difference that comes with farming practices that Make A Difference!
We weren't there on processing day, but Jocelynn encouraged us to come back sometime to see it in person. They believe strongly in transparency and knowing as much as you can about your food and where it comes from.
The M.A.D. team shows Robert their South Poll cattle on the way to check out the poultry pasture and woods where their hogs root and forage.
