TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)— The group Move for Hunger estimates that we dispose of 277,000 miles of wrapping paper and 125,000 tons of plastic packaging during the holiday season.
Justine Greve with Full Circle Sustainability said numbers like those can be easily avoided.
“Just really try to avoid using purchased gift wrap, you don’t have to use it. Use paper that things come wrapped in already like the brown paper - get creative. You can use the fabric you’ve got on hand already, use a nice old shirt to wrap up something, and reuse ribbons and bows from previous years. There are lots of ways you can get around gift wrap,” said Greve. “If you do use gift bags and that sort of thing keep those around for next year - you can reuse those over and over. Gift wrap, some of that can be recycled but not all of it so be careful.”
